Hastings has officially launched its bid to be named UK Town of Culture 2028, with organisers setting out plans for a major programme of events centred on community and creativity.

The bid is being led by Arts Hastings CIC, working in partnership with Hastings Borough Council and a wide network of local organisations, businesses and community groups.

It aims to showcase Hastings as a town shaped by creativity and independent spirit, with a focus on bringing cultural activity into every neighbourhood rather than concentrating it in one place.

Organisers say the plans also look to tackle key local challenges, including social mobility, health inequalities and opportunities for young people, by using culture to support skills, education and employment.

The bid outlines a long-term vision beyond 2028, including strengthening the town’s cultural sector, boosting the creative economy and embedding arts and culture into everyday life.

Pranesh Datta, from Hastings Borough Council, says the process has already helped build strong partnerships across the town, which could deliver lasting benefits regardless of the outcome.
