Hospital To Permanently Close Due To 'Financial Constraints' In West Sussex

Zachary Merton Hospital in Rustington, Littlehampton, will not reopen following its temporary closure in late 2023.
Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust confirmed the decision, citing financial constraints and the high cost of repairs.
The hospital was shut after water damage, ceiling issues, and heating faults were identified. A subsequent independent survey estimated that restoring the site would cost around £8 million. The trust has stated that no funding is available to carry out the necessary work.
As a result, the site will be declared surplus to requirement. The trust said operational plans are in place to continue providing care across the region, with a greater focus on at-home support and community-based services.
Previously, the hospital housed an intermediate care unit, but rehabilitation beds are now provided across the trust’s West Sussex network. Clinical and office staff have been redeployed, and a public survey and drop-in event will be held this summer to gather local feedback.
