A new 30mph speed limit has been introduced at a major Sussex roundabout following almost 40 crashes in five years.
The change applies at the Washington Roundabout on the A283/A24 near Storrington, with a 50mph limit now also in force on both the northbound and southbound approaches.
West Sussex County Council’s highways, transport and planning team confirmed there had been 37 collisions in and around the roundabout between May 2019 and April 2024.
The improvement scheme is expected to cost just over £197,000.
In a report, the council said the new measures are designed to “help reduce the collision risk at this roundabout”.
Public consultation received mixed views, with 12 statements in support and 15 objections.
Supporters said slower speeds were needed due to safety concerns, particularly when joining the roundabout, while objectors argued the lower limit could cause confusion, congestion and longer journey times, as well as unnecessary expense.
