Work is set to begin next month on a new pet cemetery in East Sussex, offering residents a local place to remember their much-loved animals.
The facility will be created within Hailsham Cemetery, with the town council aiming to have it open by the end of March.
Hailsham Town Council said the decision was taken after it became clear that the nearest existing pet cemetery is in Lewes, leaving many residents without a nearby option.
The new site will include space for 100 plots, with each plot able to hold the ashes of up to two pets.
Mary Laxton, chair of the council’s assets management committee, said the project recognises the important role pets play in people’s lives.
“For many people, pets are beloved members of the family, and their loss can be deeply felt,” she said.
“This project will provide a dignified and local place where residents can lay their pets to rest and remember them in peaceful surroundings.”
She added that the design of the cemetery has been carefully planned to ensure it is respectful, well maintained and attractively landscaped.
“It is our hope that the new pet cemetery will offer comfort and solace to those experiencing the loss of a cherished companion, and provide a meaningful place of remembrance for the community,” she said.
Each plot will measure 12 inches by 12 inches and will cost £99 per pet.
Memorial plaques or grave markers will be limited to a maximum size of seven inches by five inches.
The council says further details will be shared closer to the opening date.
