A newborn foal has been named after comedian Ricky Gervais in recognition of his support for a Sussex-based animal charity.
Safe Haven for Donkeys, based in Haywards Heath, received a share of £2.5 million donated by Gervais to animal charities over Christmas.
The foal, named Gervais, was born at the charity’s sanctuary in Israel after her mother, Deborah, was rescued from the Negev desert while heavily pregnant and without care.
A local resident alerted the charity, and Deborah was taken to safety where she was monitored throughout her pregnancy.
Andy Foxcroft, chief executive of Safe Haven for Donkeys, said:
“When Deborah arrived, she was heavily pregnant and had no one to care for her. To see her now, safe and calm with her foal beside her, is incredibly moving.
“Gervais is full of life and already showing off her first teeth. She has brought so much joy to the team and is a tiny symbol of hope this World Donkey Day.”
The charity says the birth highlights the importance of sanctuary care for animals rescued from neglect and hardship.
