Around 150 cyclists from Normandy have arrived in Battle this week on solar-powered electric bicycles, almost 1,000 years after the events of the Battle of Hastings.

The riders took part in the three-day Vhélio Trophy, a French cycling event running from 13 to 15 May as part of celebrations for the European Year of the Normans.

Teams of six have designed and built their own eco-friendly solar-powered vehicles and travelled through Newhaven and Pevensey before finishing at Battle Abbey.

Battle Town councillor Marie-Louise Neill said the event celebrates the town’s historic significance while promoting sustainable travel.

Participants will be welcomed into Battle on 15 May by local residents and Mayor Andrew Barton, who will present awards including prizes created by students at Claverham Community College.

Organisers hope the event will become a regular fixture, with plans for an even larger Norman-themed cycling event in the future.
