Aldi has formally submitted plans to build a new supermarket in Polegate.

The store would be constructed on a vacant four-and-a-half-acre site east of Eastbourne Road (A2270), just south of the Esso petrol station and Tesco Express.

As part of the same application, the site masterplan also includes proposals for a care home, which would provide around 75–80 beds across three floors.

The care home element is currently in outline form, meaning further details would be confirmed later if the scheme is approved.

The land was previously used as playing fields by Eastbourne College of Higher Education and later the University of Brighton, but has been unused since 1997.

Aldi says the development would “create a sustainable neighbourhood,” with the supermarket complementing existing local amenities and encouraging residents to walk or cycle rather than drive.

The planning statement adds:

“The Aldi will complement the other local amenities, creating opportunities for convenient, linked trips which support the daily life of residents.”

Wealden District Council is now considering the application, which can be viewed under reference WD/2025/0904/MAJ.
