The Capitol Horsham closed its doors on 4 January for its first major refurbishment in over 20 years – and the project is now well underway.

All seating in the main auditorium has been removed, scaffolding installed, and contractors are working on a new house lighting system, along with full repairs and redecoration of walls and ceilings.

Other areas, including the gallery and ground floor bars, cinema rooms, WCs, and even the revolving front door, have also been stripped out to allow for comprehensive upgrades.

Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, Culture and Green Spaces, Cllr David Skipp, said:

“This is a really exciting time for us.
"The works are progressing well, and we are confident everything will be ready for our grand re-opening in November, in time for the 2026 panto, Dick Whittington.”

The refurbishment will refresh public areas, improve comfort, and enhance the overall experience for visitors.

Upgrades include modernised theatre and cinema spaces, new seating, and refreshed bars. All toilets are being updated, with additional facilities for women to reduce queues during intervals.

Significant improvements are also being made for accessibility.

A new Changing Places facility is being installed, along with better seating arrangements for wheelchair users and customers with limited mobility, ensuring they can enjoy shows alongside friends and family.

Behind the scenes, plumbing and heating systems are being upgraded, including new boilers, to ensure the venue continues to operate efficiently for years to come.

A temporary box office is now open at Swan Walk Shopping Centre, and tickets for Dick Whittington are already on sale.

The theatre is expected to reopen in November 2026, ready to welcome audiences back with a modern, accessible, and comfortable venue for theatre, cinema, and community events.
