Three people were rescued from cliffs at Fairlight after becoming stuck partway down as daylight faded.

Coastguards were called just before 5pm on Wednesday, working alongside a rope-rescue team to reach the group.

All three were brought safely to the top, uninjured but cold, before darkness set in.

Emergency teams provided blankets, jackets and water while they were checked over.

A spokesperson praised the “safe and successful end” to what could have been a much more serious incident.

They also urged the public to take care near cliff edges, plan routes carefully, and allow plenty of daylight when out, saying:

“As the days are still short and temperatures drop quickly after sunset, it’s worth keeping an eye on the time and staying safe.”
