Part of the A29 Shripney Road has been closed due to severe flooding after the area was hit by what officials say is the equivalent of two weeks’ rainfall in just 24 hours.

West Sussex County Council shut the road from 6am, warning that floodwater made the route unsafe for drivers.

Pumping operations are now underway to remove water from the carriageway into a nearby ditch, in agreement with the landowner.

However, drainage systems have been overwhelmed by the sheer volume of water, meaning the road cannot yet be safely reopened.

The council says teams are working continuously to clear the flooding, but further rain forecast means additional closures remain possible.

Officials are working with partners including Arun District Council and the Environment Agency to explore long-term solutions to what they describe as a recurring flooding problem in the area.

A detailed review is expected to investigate the causes and identify ways to reduce future flood risk and improve road resilience.

Drivers are being urged to check the latest travel and weather updates before setting out.
