People across Sussex are being urged to prepare for an exceptional spell of hot and humid weather that could see temperatures approach 40°C in some areas.
Weather experts say parts of southern England are likely to experience two to three days of extreme heat, with temperatures widely exceeding 37°C and exceptionally warm nights offering little relief.
The warning highlights a risk of serious health impacts across the wider population, with officials stressing that the conditions could affect anyone, not just the elderly or those with existing health conditions.
The heatwave is expected to bring significant disruption, including possible transport delays, increased pressure on power and water supplies and a heightened risk of incidents at beaches, rivers and lakes as more people seek ways to cool down.
Residents are being advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day and avoid strenuous exercise between 11:00 and 15:00.
Keeping curtains closed in sun-facing rooms can also help keep homes cooler.
Anyone heading to the coast is being reminded that the sea can remain dangerously cold despite high air temperatures.
Water safety experts advise entering the water slowly, swimming at lifeguarded beaches and floating on your back if you get into difficulty.
Drivers and public transport users are also being encouraged to check travel updates before setting off, as extreme temperatures can affect roads, rail services and other infrastructure.
People are being asked to look out for vulnerable relatives, friends and neighbours, particularly older people and those with underlying health conditions.
Authorities say the expected conditions remain rare in the UK and are urging residents to adjust their daily routines where possible to stay safe.
