An amber heat health alert has been issued for Sussex as exceptionally hot and humid conditions are expected to continue through Wednesday and Thursday.

Forecasters say daytime temperatures are likely to exceed 30C across much of the South East, with some areas potentially reaching the high 30s.

Overnight temperatures are also expected to remain unusually high, staying above 20C in some locations.

The alert warns that heat-related illness could affect the wider population, not just those traditionally considered vulnerable, with disruption possible to transport networks and essential services.

Officials are urging people to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day between 11am and 3pm, and seek shade wherever possible.

Residents are also being encouraged to check on elderly relatives, neighbours and those with underlying health conditions.

The hot spell is expected to lead to increased visitor numbers at beaches, rivers and lakes across Sussex, prompting renewed water safety warnings.

Road users and rail passengers are being advised to check travel information before setting out, as high temperatures could cause delays and disruption.

The current spell of very hot weather is expected to continue until at least Thursday, with cooler conditions potentially arriving later in the week.
