Man found guilty of sexual assault by penetration

A man has been found guilty of sexual assault on a woman in Brighton after standing trial.

George Woolgar-Brown, 30, was accused of targeting the woman known to him.

The victim, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, has received support from specially-trained officers.Woolgar-Brown, of Lyminster Avenue, Brighton, stood trial at Brighton Crown Court, and was found guilty on 13 August after a trial.

He now faces sentencing for sexual assault by penetration, and was remanded in custody to next appear in court on 6 November.

The charge related to a non-recent offence in Brighton.

The jury heard evidence that Woolgar-Brown had stayed over at the victim’s address following a wake.

He entered her room and her bed and sexually assaulted her.

The victim described how she was “shocked” and how she “froze”, and described the ongoing impact of the assault on her life.

Immediately after the sexual assault she left the room, while Woolgar-Brown left the address.

Speaking after the trial, Detective Constable Elaine Welsh said:

“I would like to commend the victim for coming forward to report her experiences to the police, and thank the witnesses who also supported our investigation.

“We take reports of sexual assault extremely seriously, and preventing violence against women and girls (VAWG) is a top priority for Sussex Police.

“We were determined to get justice for the victim in this case, and Woolgar-Brown now faces sentencing.”
