Border Force has joined a policing initiative at Gatwick aimed at disrupting criminal activity, including terrorism.

The agency is now part of Project Servator — a tactic used since 2014 to deter and detect crime while providing a visible, reassuring presence for passengers.

Danny Hewitt, Border Force’s Director for UK Command Operations, said:

“There’s no need to be alarmed. These deployments are taken at random. We don’t have a specific threat we’re looking for — this is about enhancing security at the airport.”

The Home Office said officers are specially trained to spot signs that someone may be carrying out reconnaissance or preparing to commit a crime.

Ch Supt Justin Burtenshaw, head of protective security for Surrey and Sussex Police, added that the public had a “vital part to play” by reporting any concerns to officers.

Border Force teams will now work alongside police at Gatwick, with plans to expand the partnership to other UK airports in the future.
