Plans to fell two centuries-old oak trees in Billingshurst have been put on hold following a decision by Billingshurst Parish Council.
At a meeting on Wednesday, councillors voted to defer the felling of the oaks on Willow Drive until further information is obtained.
The trees have been at the centre of a dispute involving a subsidence claim by Axa Insurance, which says the roots have caused long-term structural damage to a nearby property.
Campaigners, however, argue that the trees have been unfairly blamed and that alternative solutions — such as root barriers or foundation work — could fix the problem without removing them.
Local residents packed the meeting to show support for saving the trees, which they describe as beautiful, historic and vital for local wildlife.
Campaigners also presented evidence suggesting bats may be roosting in the oaks and claimed that reports supporting their removal were outdated and insufficient.
Axa said it continues to work with the council to find a solution that protects both its customer’s home and the community’s environmental concerns, but maintains that independent reports have recommended felling.
Campaigners say they are prepared to take legal action to protect the trees if the council decides to go ahead with their removal.
