Dog owners across Sussex are being warned to keep Easter treats out of reach of their pets, as chocolate and dried fruits can be highly toxic to dogs.

Dogs Trust Shoreham says chocolate contains theobromine, which dogs struggle to process and can lead to symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures and, in severe cases, death.

The charity is also highlighting the dangers of hot cross buns and Simnel cake, as raisins, currants and sultanas can cause life-threatening kidney failure in dogs.

Owners are being urged to contact their vet immediately if their dog eats chocolate or any form of grapes, fresh or dried.

Advice includes avoiding giving dogs human treats, keeping food out of reach, securing bins, and supervising pets during Easter egg hunts to prevent them from eating hidden chocolate.

Dogs Trust is also encouraging owners to consider safer alternatives, such as dog-friendly treats or even hiding vegetables like carrots or broccoli for pets to find.

The charity says taking a few simple precautions can help ensure a safe and enjoyable Easter for both owners and their dogs.
