A man from Eastbourne has been charged with terrorism offences following an investigation by counter-terrorism police.

Mohammed Abdulkalik Fadil Alazawi, of Bedford Grove, is accused of three counts of encouraging people to commit, prepare or instigate acts of terrorism.

According to Sussex Police, the charges follow the arrest of a man on Friday on suspicion of supporting the so-called Islamic State.

The arrest was part of a pre-planned operation led by Counter Terrorism Policing South East, investigating suspected Islamist terrorism-related social media posts.

Chief Superintendent Justin Burtensaw said:

“I appreciate arrests of this nature can cause people in the local community to feel unsettled.
“There is not believed to be any immediate risk to those in the community, but I would urge anyone who has any concerns to contact police.”

Alazawi has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Monday.
