It’s one of Britain’s best-loved foods – and now Heinz Beanz is celebrating its 140th birthday with some eye-catching figures.
First arriving in the UK in 1886, baked beans are now a household staple, with Brits consuming more than anywhere else in the world – around one and a half cans each every week.
Production is on a massive scale, with up to two million cans produced every day at Heinz’s Wigan factory – nearly a billion beans daily.
Looking closer to home, the numbers are staggering.
The total number of beans produced over time could fill the Brighton i360 hundreds of times over, or pack out Arundel Castle more than 100 times.
Even the More Radio studios could be filled more than 22,000 times with the same number of beans.
Despite the scale, the famous Heinz recipe remains a tightly guarded secret, known by just four people.
After 140 years, from beans on toast to the full English breakfast, Britain’s love affair with baked beans is as strong as ever.
