A disgraced former Sussex Police officer has walked free from court after admitting to reckless driving that left two people injured during a blue-light emergency run.
Ex-PC Ciaran Gaymer, 26, was behind the wheel of an unmarked Ford S-Max on 17 May when he smashed into a car at the busy A259/Harley Shute Road junction in Hastings.
Shockingly, footage from his passenger’s body-worn camera showed Gaymer steering the speeding vehicle with just two fingers on one hand as he blasted through a red light with sirens wailing.
The impact sent a member of the public’s car spinning.
Both the driver and passenger, who had been correctly driving through a green light at the time, sustained minor injuries.
At Staines Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 11 September, Gaymer pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention.
He avoided prison, instead receiving a six-month conditional discharge, plus £85 in costs and a £26 victim surcharge.
Sussex Police’s Roads Policing Unit investigated the crash, which ultimately ended Gaymer’s career with the force.
Inspector Matt Wightwick said:
“Police officers undertake driving training to allow swift responses to emergencies while keeping the public safe.
"That training requires a level of due care and attention, which was found to be lacking in ex-PC Gaymer’s driving.
"Thankfully, the two victims were not seriously injured.”
The case has sparked outrage locally, with many questioning how an officer could escape jail despite dangerous driving that injured innocent motorists.
