Firefighters are warning residents about the dangers of rechargeable devices after a vape sparked a house fire in Aldwick.
Crews were called to a property on South Avenue at around 10.40am on Thursday (2 October) following reports of a blaze.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus quickly tackled the fire, which destroyed a first-floor bedroom. A vape found in the room is believed to have caused the blaze.
Watch Commander Duncan Warwood said lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly used in vapes and e-cigarettes, can ignite if they’re damaged or faulty.
“Never use a device if there’s a chance the battery could be damaged,” he said.
“Only buy electronic devices and chargers from reputable retailers, and always make sure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home.”
Station Manager Darren Wickings, who chairs the LIBERATE lithium-ion safety group, added that while such batteries are generally safe, they pose a fire risk if overcharged, short-circuited, or damaged.
“Always use the charger supplied with your device,” he said.
“Don’t leave it charging unattended or overnight, and unplug it once it’s fully charged.”
The LIBERATE group works to share best practice and raise awareness about the risks linked to lithium-ion batteries, with members from fire services, waste companies, and safety organisations across the UK.
