The famous Floral Clock in Palmeira Square, Hove, could be replaced by a sundial, following feedback from a recent public consultation.

More than 1,100 people took part in Brighton and Hove City Council’s survey on the future of the long-disused landmark, which hasn’t worked for 21 years.

When asked about landscaping preferences, around half of the 870 respondents supported Mediterranean-style planting.

Over 200 people voted for a traditional sundial to take the clock’s place, while 160 preferred a more contemporary design.

Other responses included 140 people who wanted to keep the existing clock, 127 who supported refurbishment, 59 who backed a replacement, and 31 who said they were happy to leave the clock as it is.

Councillor Alan Robins, cabinet member for sports, recreation and libraries, said:

“There’s a lot of love for Palmeira Square. Relandscaping with sustainable planting looks favourable, but there were mixed views on what people want to see in the Floral Clock location.
"We’re exploring what’s feasible and can be maintained for years to come.”

He added that the council is working with the Friends of Palmeira Square and a local working group to decide next steps.

While major changes won’t begin until decisions are finalised, path improvements are expected to start soon.

More than 3,000 people also signed a petition to save the Floral Clock, which was presented at Hove Town Hall earlier this month by local resident Laura King.

After a debate, councillors voted to note the petition, leaving Ms King disappointed that no further action was agreed.
