Tens of thousands of people packed into Lewes on Tuesday night (November 5) for one of the country’s biggest and most historic Bonfire Night celebrations.
Early estimates suggest around 40,000 people attended the event — one of the busiest in recent years — with crowds gathering to enjoy the traditional processions, bonfires and firework displays organised by the town’s bonfire societies.
The huge celebration is a major operation involving months of planning between local authorities, emergency services, transport partners and community groups.
Organisers have praised the teamwork that helped the event run smoothly once again.
According to Sussex Police, just three arrests were made during the evening:
A 38-year-old man from Lewes, arrested on suspicion of battery (later released on bail)
A 27-year-old man from Lewes, arrested on suspicion of assault and battery (remains in custody)
A 16-year-old girl arrested for failing to comply with a dispersal order, who was later released and taken home
St John Ambulance and South East Coast Ambulance Service treated around 82 people for various injuries and medical issues, with seven taken to hospital.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service also dealt with a small number of incidents across the evening.
Lewes District Council teams worked overnight to clean the town, ensuring streets were clear and safe by the following morning.
Local agencies have described this year’s bonfire as a safe and successful night, with most visitors enjoying the festivities without incident.
Planning will soon begin for Lewes Bonfire 2026, continuing the long-running partnership approach that keeps one of Sussex’s most iconic events running safely each year.
