A historic church in Hastings says its future has been secured thanks to a £4.5 million grant.

Holy Trinity Church (HTH), a Grade II*-listed building in the town centre, has received the funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to support what it describes as one of the most significant restoration projects the area has seen.

The church said the building was at risk of being lost without urgent work, as its sandstone walls, stained glass and structure continued to deteriorate.

The restoration will include repairs to the exterior, windows and drainage systems, as well as the refurbishment of the church’s war memorial.

Plans also include improving access and community facilities.

Heritage lead Jerry Hocking said the team was “thrilled” with the news, while vicar Simon Larkin said the project would have a lasting impact on the town.

“This is hugely important for our church and our community,” he said.
“This building, once at risk of closure, is now alive again and a place of hope and inspiration.”

The wider project will also involve more than 200 volunteers and a full programme of community activities, workshops and school projects, supported by an additional £420,000 raised from trusts and local donors.
