A man has been arrested after a social media post allegedly called for Jewish businesses to be targeted with “stink bombs”.
The post, reportedly made as a comment on the Brighton and Hove Palestine Solidarity Campaign Facebook page, is also said to have suggested throwing “ripe fruit and eggs” at synagogues.
Sussex Police said officers attended an address in Newhaven on Sunday afternoon following reports of threatening comments posted online.
A man was arrested on suspicion of four offences, including sending offensive or menacing messages, using threatening words to stir up religious hatred, making threats to damage property, and possession of a class B drug.
He remained in custody on Sunday evening.
Detective Chief Superintendent Richard McDonagh said threatening and hateful messages are “completely unacceptable” and that anyone targeting communities of any faith can expect a robust response.
He urged people not to speculate while a full investigation is carried out.
