A man has been jailed for more than two years after stealing an Asda van in Eastbourne and leading police on a pursuit.

Shane Brett, 30, stole the vehicle from Sovereign Harbour Retail Park on Pevensey Bay Road at around 6.20am on Friday 30 January.

Officers responded quickly and carried out a tactical pursuit, bringing the van to a stop in The Fairway, Newhaven.

A roadside drugs test showed Brett was positive for cocaine.

He was arrested and charged the following day with theft of a motor vehicle, burglary, dangerous driving and driving without insurance.

Brett, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates’ Court and was remanded in custody.

He was later sentenced at Lewes Crown Court on 12 March to 26 months in prison and disqualified from driving for four years.
