Overnight Deep Cleaning Team Rolled Out In Brighton And Hove To Tackle City Centre Maintenance

A new overnight deep cleaning team has been launched in Brighton and Hove in a bid to improve the appearance of the city centre.

Brighton & Hove City Council has officially rolled out the service following a successful trial last Thursday evening.

The specialist team works overnight to carry out tasks that would be difficult during the day, including jet washing pavements, removing graffiti and repainting street furniture while the city centre is quieter.

The approach is already used in other UK cities, including Westminster.

Councillor Tim Rowkins, Cabinet Member for Net Zero and Environmental Services, said the move reflects the importance of maintaining the city’s appearance for both residents and visitors.

He said:

“We know that our residents and businesses want a cleaner city centre.

“People love visiting Brighton and Hove and we have an incredibly vibrant night-time economy.

“All of that has a big impact on the city centre and, like any good host, we need to clean up properly after the party.”

The council says the daytime cleaning teams will continue their usual work, including litter picking, fly-tip clearance and maintaining hygiene standards across public spaces.

The new overnight crew has started by focusing on bus stops near Churchill Square, with work gradually moving towards Montpellier Road in the coming weeks.

The council adds that any disruption from noise will be kept to a minimum, with teams moving around different locations overnight rather than working in one fixed area.
