The UK Government is calling on residents across Sussex to share their opinions on a big proposed restructure of local government.

Right now, East Sussex and West Sussex both use a two-tier system (county and district councils).

But under the new plans, these could be replaced with unitary councils — meaning fewer, larger authorities with more combined powers.

People have until early next year to submit their feedback, as the government aims for elections to a new unitary structure in May 2027.

Supporters say the change could lead to more streamlined services, better coordination on issues like transport, housing and climate planning, and reduced bureaucracy.

Critics warn it could dilute local democracy and make councils more distant from the communities they serve.

This consultation gives Sussex residents a real say in how their local services are run in the future — and potentially shapes the political landscape of the county for decades to come.
