Rother residents are set to be consulted on proposals to increase the maximum fares charged by Hackney Carriage taxis across the district.

Rother District Council's cabinet agreed to launch the public consultation at a meeting on Monday (15 June).

The proposed changes would increase maximum taxi fares by around 10 per cent compared with current rates.

The recommendation was previously supported by the council's Licensing and General Purposes Committee in May.

Council officers said taxi fares were last reviewed in April 2023, when diesel cost around 161p per litre.

By late April this year, diesel prices had risen to 191p per litre, although more recent figures suggest an average price of around 181p per litre.

Speaking at the meeting, licensing lead officer Richard Parker-Harding said fuel costs had fluctuated significantly in recent months.

Residents will be able to share their views during the consultation period before any final decision is made.

If no objections are received, the revised fare structure is expected to come into force in October.
