Rail services through Gatwick Airport are facing disruption after a train struck an obstruction on the line near Salfords in Surrey.
Operators Thameslink and Southern first reported the issue at around 6am on Tuesday.
Passengers travelling to, from or through Gatwick Airport are being warned that services may be cancelled, delayed by up to 30 minutes or revised.
Some trains that are running could also use alternative platforms at certain stations.
A spokesperson said the train had correctly passed through a signal before hitting the object, which caused damage to its shoe gear – equipment that collects power from the electric third rail.
Another train is being sent to couple up to the affected service and move it clear of the area.
Thameslink has suspended services between Three Bridges and Bedford.
No northbound trains are currently calling at Salfords or Earlswood until further notice.
Southbound services are operating to an amended timetable, allowing passengers to change at Redhill.
Ticket acceptance is in place on alternative routes between East Croydon and Gatwick Airport, as well as on local bus services.
Disruption is expected to continue this afternoon.
Passengers on any stranded services are being urged to remain on board and listen to announcements.
Rail operators say other trains may still be moving in the area and the track environment is extremely hazardous, warning passengers not to attempt to leave trains unless instructed.
Elsewhere, Southern services between Eastbourne and Lewes are also experiencing delays of up to 10 minutes due to a signalling problem at Polegate.
