Tributes have been paid to a “much loved” motorcyclist after the drink-driver responsible for his death was jailed.
Matthew Burdikin, 38, from Hastings, was riding his Honda motorcycle along the A21 near Robertsbridge on the evening of 10 October 2024 when he was involved in a fatal collision.
A Ford Transit van travelling in the opposite direction, driven by Lee Hatfield, crossed into the wrong carriageway and struck him head-on shortly after 8pm.
Despite the efforts of emergency services, Matthew was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hatfield (below), 33, from St Leonards, was found to be over the legal alcohol limit, with 54 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath – well above the limit of 35.

He was arrested at the scene and later pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and causing death while over the prescribed alcohol limit.
At Lewes Crown Court, Hatfield was sentenced to five years and two months in prison, reduced from seven years due to his early guilty plea.
He has also been disqualified from driving for seven years.
The court heard that Hatfield had drifted into the opposite carriageway multiple times before the collision, leaving Matthew with no opportunity to avoid the crash.
In a statement, Matthew’s family described him as a loving father and a gentle, kind-hearted person whose loss has left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
They said his death has created a void that can never be filled and paid tribute to his role as a devoted parent, partner and friend.
Police have highlighted the devastating consequences of drink-driving, stressing that decisions made behind the wheel can have life-changing and fatal consequences.
Officers say they will continue efforts to educate drivers and take action against those who choose to drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
