University of Brighton academics are playing a key role in a new national “green healthcare” hub designed to help the NHS cut its carbon footprint and move towards net zero.
Funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), the £6 million programme will bring together researchers, NHS partners and policymakers to find practical ways to reduce emissions across health services over the next five years.
Healthcare in England currently accounts for an estimated 4–5% of national carbon emissions.
The hub will look at everything from procurement and supply chains to hospital estates, clinical practice and community care, developing tools, frameworks and policies to support greener healthcare delivery.
As a core partner, the University of Brighton will lead work on community engagement, building on its experience of working directly with patients, carers and healthcare staff to design real-world solutions.
The project is led by Brighton and Sussex Medical School alongside partners including the University of Sussex and NHS organisations nationwide.
It is one of seven hubs funded nationally as part of a £42m investment to support the UK’s journey to a more sustainable, climate-resilient future.
