A weather warning is in place for West Sussex until 9pm on Friday, February 6, as heavy rain and showers are forecast to bring the risk of disruption and localised flooding.
Periods of rain, heavy at times, are expected to lead to surface water flooding in some areas.
Drivers are being warned of spray and standing water on roads, which could significantly increase journey times.
Public transport may also be affected, with bus and train services likely to experience delays.
There is also a chance of brief interruptions to power supplies and other essential services, along with possible flooding of a small number of homes and businesses.
The rain is expected to move in during Thursday morning, followed by a short-lived drier spell.
However, heavy and slow-moving showers are forecast to develop during the afternoon, turning into more persistent rain through the evening, overnight and into Friday.
Rainfall totals of 20 to 30mm are expected widely, with some higher ground areas seeing more than 50mm.
With soil conditions already very wet, surface water flooding is considered likely, particularly on roads.
Residents are being urged to check whether their property is at risk of flooding and to prepare accordingly.
Those travelling should plan ahead, check traffic conditions and public transport timetables, and adjust journeys if needed.
People are also advised to prepare for potential power cuts by having essential items such as torches, batteries and phone chargers to hand, and to keep an eye on the latest local weather updates as conditions may change rapidly.
