Highways teams in West Sussex are reviewing whether a rise in drivers turning the wrong way onto a dual carriageway could be linked to satellite navigation instructions.

West Sussex County Council cabinet member for highways and transport Joy Dennis said the authority is exploring “the most appropriate actions” to improve safety on the A24 near Copsale, following reports of vehicles entering the southbound carriageway in the wrong direction.

The move follows concerns raised after a collision involving a driver who turned into the road and struck another vehicle. One woman described the crash as “horrific”, although no injuries were reported.

In a letter to Horsham MP John Milne, Ms Dennis said she was “very concerned” about the increase in incidents.

Council officers have identified that some satellite navigation systems may not clearly reflect the road layout at the junction.

A council spokesperson said it is considering what changes can be made and is working with relevant organisations to address the issue.

It added that highways officers have inspected the junction and confirmed that required signs and road markings are in place.

The BBC has contacted sat-nav providers for comment.
