A Worthing singing group supporting people with long-term lung conditions has joined forces with NHS Sussex to share important winter health advice — with a festive twist.
The Singing for Fun group, based at the Guild Care Centre, was founded by Roger and Sheila Sharman after discovering that singing and basic breathing exercises helped them manage their own lung conditions.
The group now brings together people living with COPD, asthma and other respiratory issues.
This Christmas, they’ve recorded a light-hearted jingle encouraging people across Sussex to look after their health as temperatures drop.
Roger, who lives with COPD, said:
“Singing has helped so many of us manage our breathing and stay connected.
"With this Christmas jingle, we wanted to give something back and help spread the word about staying healthy over winter.”
NHS Sussex is highlighting the project as a positive example of how local communities can support wellbeing through the colder months.
Winter Health Tips from NHS Sussex
Residents are being encouraged to follow simple steps to stay well:
Seek medical advice early if you feel unwell — especially if you’re over 65 or have a long-term condition. Support is available via pharmacies, GPs and NHS 111.
Get winter vaccines if you’re eligible, including flu, COVID-19 boosters and the pneumococcal jab for over-65s.
Keep your home warm (ideally at 18°C or above) and ensure heating is safe.
Stay active — even light exercise supports physical and mental health.
Look after your mental wellbeing: get daylight, stay connected, eat well and keep warm.
Wash your hands regularly for at least 20 seconds.
Check your medicine cabinet and make sure you have over-the-counter essentials and repeat prescriptions sorted before the holidays.
Look in on vulnerable neighbours, friends and relatives.
For urgent dental issues, contact your dentist or call the Sussex Dental Helpline on 0300 123 1663 (8am–4pm, Monday to Friday).
Allison Cannon, Chief Nursing Officer for NHS Sussex, said:
“Winter can be especially challenging for older people and those with long-term conditions.
"This local group has found a creative and uplifting way to share important messages, and we hope the song encourages people across Sussex to take simple steps to stay well.”
The group’s festive video, Healthy All The Way – The Staying Well Song, is available to watch online.
