Birling Gap beach is set to reopen a week earlier than planned after repair works on the cliffside staircase were completed ahead of schedule.

The beach has been closed for around two months following cliff falls that damaged the steps connecting the car park to the shoreline.

Wealden District Council, which manages the foreshore on behalf of The Crown Estate, confirmed the beach will reopen to the public from Friday, rather than the previously planned 2 May.

A council spokesperson said they were pleased to reopen the site early, especially with current good weather bringing more visitors to the coast.

The steps were closed after further erosion at Birling Gap, where cliffs made of coombe rock are particularly vulnerable to collapse compared with nearby areas such as the Seven Sisters.

The area has seen significant changes in recent years, including major erosion during winter storms in 2013 and 2014, and earlier relocation of the staircase in 2017 after safety concerns.

The council thanked the National Trust, RNLI, Coastguard teams and contractors for helping complete the works ahead of schedule.
