A community-focused boxing club in Burgess Hill is helping people of all ages get active while supporting young people to make positive life choices.

South Downs Amateur Boxing Club was co-founded by Lisa Houston, who combined her passion for boxing with the business skills she developed while studying at the University of Brighton.

Based in Burgess Hill, the club offers accessible sessions for a wide range of participants, including children from the age of five, teenagers, women-only groups and people living with Parkinson’s.

Run alongside experienced coach Shaun Stepney, the club aims to create a welcoming space for both beginners and aspiring amateur boxers, while promoting wellbeing and a strong sense of community.

The initiative is also working closely with Sussex Police in Burgess Hill to support the “Reboot” scheme – an early intervention programme designed to steer young people away from crime by offering structured activities and mentoring.

Lisa said the club was created to give something back to the local area.

She explained that boxing has always been a big part of her life, but the aim was to build more than just a sports club – instead creating a supportive environment where people feel included regardless of their background or ability.

The club was launched in 2025 and has quickly established itself as a hub for community sport, with a focus on improving both mental and physical health.

Lisa also credits support from the university’s enterprise programme, beepurple, with helping turn the idea into a reality by providing guidance, mentoring and practical advice on starting a business.

South Downs Amateur Boxing Club is now looking to build on its success, with plans to expand and continue supporting the local community, while also raising funds to support equipment, running costs and future development.
