Burgess Hill Set To Become Car-Free Town Centre After One-Vote Decision

A major change to the future of Burgess Hill has been agreed — after a proposal was decided in favour by just a single vote.
Plans to make the town centre completely car-free were narrowly approved at a meeting of Middle Sussex Districts Council, passing by just one vote following a lengthy and at times heated debate.
The proposal will see private vehicles banned from key central areas, with streets instead prioritised for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.
Supporters of the scheme say it will improve air quality, reduce congestion and create a more attractive environment for residents, shoppers and visitors.
One councillor backing the plans described the decision as “a bold step towards a cleaner, healthier future for Burgess Hill”.
However, the narrow margin of the vote reflects strong opposition, with some councillors and local business representatives raising concerns about access and the potential impact on trade.
Under the plans, new cycle lanes and widened walkways will be introduced, along with designated drop-off points on the edge of the town centre.
A free bike and e-scooter hire scheme is also being considered to help people travel into the area without needing a car.
Critics argue the move could make it harder for customers to reach shops, particularly those travelling from surrounding villages or relying on vehicles for work.
Despite this, council leaders say the decision reflects a long-term vision for the town and insist support measures will be put in place during the transition.
A formal consultation on how the scheme will be implemented is expected to launch later this year.
If it goes ahead as planned, the changes could begin to be introduced from next year.

Was this an April fools ?? Not many comments for the town .
I'm hoping this is an April Fool. If not the council clearly want to drive away the few remaining shops. I was horrified by the state on the town centre last week, boarded up shop after boarded up shop.
What’s the point. The town centre has been ruined, hardly any shops left and this will kill the rest. How stupid and pathetic. I suppose it allows the councillors to enjoy their brown envelopes from the developers.
Who wants to visit or stay in a hotel in burgess hill. It's like a bloody grave yard . I've seen more life in a mortuary .
Burgess hill is a bloody mess , won't need cars , no bloody shops to visit
