Thousands of homes across parts of the South East are experiencing water supply problems following a burst main linked to a treatment works in East Sussex.

Around 5,000 properties supplied by South East Water have been affected, with customers reporting low pressure or no water after a fault on a key pipeline from Bewl Water.

The issue is impacting communities across the Kent border, but the source of the problem lies within Sussex infrastructure, highlighting the wider regional impact of the disruption.

Engineers have been working to carry out repairs, although the company has warned the work is more complex than first anticipated.

Water supplies are expected to be restored later today, if progress continues as planned.

As a result of the fault, water levels in storage tanks have dropped, increasing the number of customers affected.

Support measures have been put in place, including bottled water stations and deliveries to vulnerable residents.

The disruption has also led to school closures in affected areas, while some businesses have been forced to consider shutting due to a lack of running water.

The incident follows previous supply issues earlier this year, which affected tens of thousands of customers across Sussex and beyond.

Water regulator Ofwat is already investigating South East Water over repeated outages.

Customers are being urged to monitor updates and use water sparingly while repairs continue.
