Plans to demolish the mortuary building at St Richard’s Hospital have been submitted to Chichester District Council.

The application, from University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, applied for prior approval to carry out the work.

A letter submitted with the application  said:

“The building has been highlighted for removal as the building fabric and internal environments are no longer suitable for modern day healthcare facilities.
“The fabric of the building also contains RAAC (reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete) which requires urgent removal in line with government guidelines regarding this 1960s deleterious material.”

As the mortuary is attached to various other sensitive healthcare services, the plan is to carefully dismantle the building, keeping the noise and dust created to a minimum.

The plan falls under permitted development rights.

This means that no planning permission is actually needed but a prior approval notification is made to ensure the council has no valid concerns to halt the process.

A temporary mortuary was installed last year.
