A van driver high on a cocktail of drugs has been jailed after causing chaos on the M23, leaving two people seriously injured in a terrifying four-vehicle smash.
Emergency services were called to the southbound stretch near Crawley at around 1pm on 14 October 2024, after a Ford Transit ploughed into stationary traffic — flipping one car onto its roof and sparking mayhem on the motorway.
Behind the wheel was 38-year-old Jordan Briggs, from Hampton, Middlesex.
When tested, he was found to have cocaine, morphine and cannabis (THC) in his system.
Dashcam footage later revealed him recklessly weaving between lanes at high speed before the devastating impact.
Two drivers suffered serious injuries and another sustained minor injuries in the crash.
Briggs was convicted of two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
At Lewes Crown Court, he was handed two and a half years in prison and banned from driving for four years.
PC Devlin from Sussex Roads Policing Unit said Briggs’s actions showed the “catastrophic dangers” of drug driving, warning that officers are determined to take offenders like him off the roads.
