Tributes are being paid after Chichester City striker Billy Vigar passed away following a serious head injury sustained during a match on Saturday (20 September).
The Worthing-born forward suffered what his family described as a “significant brain injury” while playing for Chichester in their Isthmian League Premier Division game against Wingate & Finchley.
He was placed in an induced coma and later underwent surgery, but sadly died on Thursday morning (25 September).
In a statement, his family said they were “devastated that this has happened while he was playing the sport he loved.”
Vigar came through Arsenal’s academy, joining at the age of 14 after being scouted at Hove Rivervale FC.
He signed professional terms in 2022 and went on to play in the Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy before leaving the club last year.
He later had spells with Derby County, Hastings United and Eastbourne Borough, before signing for Chichester City this summer.
Hastings United said:
“All of us at Hastings United are devastated to learn of the passing of Billy Vigar.
"We will always remember Billy's time at Hastings United with fondness. Our thoughts are with Billy's family and friends at this time.”
Eastbourne Borough added:
“Both footballing and non-footballing club staff are shocked and deeply saddened at the news, and our thoughts are with Billy's family at this terrible time.”
The FA also paid tribute, saying:
“We send our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, loved ones and everyone at Chichester City FC at this incredibly difficult time.”
Chichester City confirmed on Thursday that their weekend fixture against Lewes has been postponed and will be rescheduled.
