GPS Tags Linked To 58% Drop In Offending Among Sussex Shoplifters

Prolific shoplifters fitted with GPS tags in Sussex committed around 58% fewer offences afterwards, according to an independent evaluation.

Operation STOP combines electronic monitoring with rehabilitation support and was initially launched in East Sussex last year before being extended across Sussex in May.

Researchers from the Centre for Public Innovation examined eight offenders during the initial analysis. All reduced their offending after being tagged, while five recorded no further offences.

The evaluation calculated an average reduction of between 11 and 13 offences per person and estimated the scheme could prevent around 300 crimes over a year.

Six people are currently wearing tags, while another 12 cases are awaiting court hearings.

Those taking part can also receive help with issues including housing, healthcare, substance misuse, benefits and employment through a dedicated support worker.
