A person has died after being hit by a train near Southwick railway station.

British Transport Police were called at around 14:15 on Thursday 17th September following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

Paramedics also attended, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

The incident resulted in the closure of railway lines between Brighton and Worthing while emergency services worked at the scene.

All lines later reopened, although Southern warned passengers that trains could continue to be delayed, changed or cancelled while the timetable recovered.

Passengers affected by the incident can contact Samaritans free of charge on 116 123.
