Motorists in West Sussex are facing significant disruption after a serious crash forced the closure of part of the M23 during the early hours of this morning (Thursday).

The collision happened at around 05:30, with a car reported to have struck the central reservation before hitting a tree on the northbound carriageway between Junction 10 at Crawley and Junction 9 for Gatwick Airport.

Emergency services, including Sussex Police, remain at the scene alongside National Highways traffic officers, who are assisting with road closures and traffic management.

Due to the severity of the incident, the northbound carriageway is expected to remain shut for several hours, with drivers advised to seek alternative routes.

Police say the vehicle involved was carrying two men and a woman at the time of the crash.

Officers are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
