Proposals for a new Scouts’ building in Littlehampton have been turned down by Arun District Council.
The single-storey modular building, planned for Linden Park, would have expanded the capacity of the existing Scout Hall and created extra space for youth activities.
But at a meeting on Wednesday (17 September), councillors rejected the scheme after the council’s drainage team raised objections.
Officials said no drainage strategy had been provided, and it was unclear whether surface water flooding risks would be properly managed.
Councillor Martin Lury (Lib Dem, Bersted) described the plans as “very laudable” and said it was a shame drainage details were missing, adding the committee would likely have “wholeheartedly” supported the proposal otherwise.
Councillor Mike Northeast (Lab, Courtwick with Toddington) urged the council to work more closely with the Scouts if they resubmitted the application, while committee chair Simon McDougall (Lab, Pevensey) said he hoped to see revised plans in the future.
The application had backing from Littlehampton Town Council and four residents, who highlighted the community benefits.
However, one objection was raised over the removal of six mature trees and the potential impact on biodiversity.
