Residents in a Sussex village were evacuated after an unexploded munition was discovered during excavation work.

Police were called to Lewes Road in Ditchling, East Sussex, at around 3:30pm on Tuesday after what was described as an unexploded chemical munition was found.

Officers attended the scene alongside an explosive ordnance disposal team, who safely removed the device.

A cordon was put in place while the incident was dealt with, forcing nearby residents to leave their homes as a precaution.
