A rogue builder has been jailed for 30 months after defrauding a Henfield homeowner and several other victims across West Sussex.

At Lewes Crown Court, Jessie Hearne, of Brighton & Sussex Roofing, pleaded guilty to fraudulent trading, fraud by misrepresentation, money laundering, and failing to meet professional standards.

The case began in November 2023 when Mr Hearne contacted a homeowner who had asked for a roofer on Facebook.

He initially quoted £3,800 for emergency repairs, but quickly increased the price to £8,800. An independent surveyor later described the work as looking “more like an act of vandalism than repairs to a roof,” adding that the repairs were unnecessary and had no value.

Trading Standards officers discovered at least six other victims, including an 88-year-old who paid £16,000.

Councillor Duncan Crow, Cabinet Member for Community Support, Fire and Rescue, said:

“Mr Hearne has routinely overcharged for his work, leaving victims facing more costs and further repairs.
"This case highlights the tremendous work our Trading Standards team does in protecting our communities and holding rogue traders accountable.”

The court also heard that action is being taken to recover criminal assets under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

⚠️ Residents worried about rogue traders are urged to contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133.
