Police have confirmed a suspected firearm recovered in Eastbourne was a plastic toy gun.

Sussex Police were called to reports of an altercation involving a man and a group of teenagers in The Hydneye area at around 11am on Sunday.

Officers attended the scene and located four boys aged between 13 and 16, who were detained and searched.

Police said one of the teenagers told officers he had thrown the suspected firearm into bushes at Sovereign Harbour.

The area was cordoned off while searches were carried out to ensure public safety.

The item was later recovered and confirmed to be a plastic toy gun.

The boys were given words of advice before being released.
