Train services between London, Gatwick Airport and Brighton have resumed after sinkholes were discovered during engineering work, causing significant disruption on Sunday.

Network Rail said urgent repairs were required after the voids were identified on a bridge south of Purley during planned works near the station.

As a result, all lines between Purley and East Croydon were closed while engineers carried out thorough inspections and worked to fill the sinkholes.

Services were suspended on key routes throughout the day, including those to Gatwick Airport and Brighton, while disruption continued into the evening.

Network Rail Kent & Sussex confirmed shortly after midnight on Monday that repairs had been completed, allowing trains to run safely again.

The organisation apologised for the disruption and said tickets from Sunday would be accepted on Monday services.
