Residents in Rother, Wealden, and Hastings will soon start receiving letters confirming the date of their first weekly food waste collection.
The new service is being introduced under the government’s Simpler Recycling Regulations, which require councils to collect food waste from households every week.
Food waste makes up around 30% of the average bin, so the new collections aim to reduce what is sent for incineration and help protect the environment.
Collections will be rolled out in phases from the end of March, so not all households will start on the same day.
Residents are asked not to use their food waste caddies until they receive their letter, which will confirm their collection day and start date.
Councillor Hazel Timpe, Rother District Council’s portfolio holder for neighbourhood services, said:
“The introduction of a food waste collection service is a very positive move.
"It will reduce the amount of waste incinerated and help protect our environment.
"Please wait until you have your letter before using your caddy.”
Councillor James Partridge, leader of Wealden District Council, added:
“This service will make a real difference.
"By separating food waste, we reduce what goes to incineration and help the environment.
"Make sure to wait for your letter before using your caddy, as collections start at different times across the district.”
Councillor Jo Walker from Hastings Borough Council said:
“Once collected, food waste will be processed into soil conditioner at Veolia’s composting facility.
"Local farmers can use it to help plants grow, and it will also be available at Household Waste Recycling Sites across East Sussex.”
Trevor Elliott, Biffa’s senior business manager, said:
“We’re working with councils to ensure a smooth rollout.
"Weekly food waste collections will help households recycle more and reduce incineration.”
